What is Coaching?

Coaching (sometimes called life coaching) is a tried and tested technique for creating change that has risen to prominence over the last 30 years. It is used by some of the world’s largest and most successful organisations, to help senior executives overcome barriers and create the changes they need to be successful. It is also popular with many people as “life coaching”, where the focus of the work is on changes clients want to make in their lives.

Coaching is a series of conversations, but a very particular kind of conversation. Unlike other techniques you may have come across, coaching is driven by you and is entirely focussed on you meeting your goals. Its emphasis is on your future, both what you want that future to be and how you can get there. During the course of that work, you will develop new insights into how you hold yourself back, and how you can release your own potential.

In coaching, the coach is responsible for the conversation process, you are responsible for the content of the conversation. This allows you to work on the areas that you feel you need to, and means that you truly own the answers that you find. In my experience, this is infinitely more personal and therefore more valuable, than any technique which is taught to you or imposed on you. You are an expert in your life and your needs – the coach is an expert in helping you change what is holding you back.
